New Year’s Eve Ball Sporting New Technology

times_square_new_years_ball
The New Year’s Eve Ball in Times Square is getting another makeover this year. Not only is the ball bigger than ever, it will also beĀ  full of new technology.

The 12 foot wide 11,900 pound ball will feature 2,688 Waterford Crystals triangles (288 more crystals than last year). The triangles, each about 3/8″ thick and 6.8 ounces in weight are custom made and built to exacting standards to withstand the stresses of high winds, precipitation and temperature fluctuation that exist over 400 feet above Times Square.

As for technology, 672 LEDs will light up the ball, capable of showing more than 16 million colours. Even though the ball is bigger, heavier and contains more lights than ever before, it will still be the most energy efficient ball in history, requiring 20% less energy than last year.
